Mental Health at Work

Secrets to maintaining your cool this holiday season.

It’s no secret that the holiday season is the most joyous, but also the most stressful time of year. From being busy at work with deadlines, to fitting in family functions and friendly get togethers, busy times lead to increased stress levels.

You might be thinking “This has nothing to do with marketing or user development.” And you’re right…. But also wrong.

The holidays take a toll on us at work oftentimes, too. So whether you’re a software developer, journalist, accountant, or something else entirely, here are some ways to take care of yourself during the fourth quarter bustle.

TAKE 5

Ok, you can take longer than five minutes, but make sure you make time for yourself. What do you enjoy? Is it a hot bath with candles and a movie or music playing? Or is it playing video games? Seeing friends over a hot meal? Whatever gives you joy, take time to engage in things that bring you that feeling.

FAMILY MATTERS

Taking care of your mental health can mean spending time with your family, blood or chosen. This could be something as simple as curling up on the couch with loved ones to watch a movie, baking cookies together or doing holiday shopping. No matter what you decide to do with loved ones, ensure the time is well spent and releases endorphins / serotonin instead of deteriorating your mental health more.

REST

It’s important to rest when you’re feeling burnt out or overwhelmed. Maybe you don’t have a lot of time to rest, but taking 20 minutes to step away from items causing harm to your mental health is a reset everyone can use.

Listen to calming music, put on a podcast or just enjoy silence.

No matter how you rest, taking time to reset will lead to more productivity, lower blood pressure and stress levels.

BOTTOM LINE

It might seem silly, or like you don’t have time to engage in mental health affairs, however; mental health is body health. It takes an effect on everything you do and can lead to inability to concentrate, make decisions, or even function at times.

Your mental health sets the tone for your business environment whether you’re the queen or worker bee. Instead of shutting down, use these steps to help maintain your cool this winter.
